Why is Dr Phil now so lame?

I remember when it first started, it was actually kind of interesting,
it was practical to everyday people, it was about solving basic issues
etc.

Now when I see it, it is filled with extreme situations, really messed
up people, it is like a freak show.

Is that just a reflection of the world or is it just a grad for
ratings?
